The Avenues Real Estate in Salt Lake City
One of Salt Lake City’s oldest neighborhoods: historic homes on a compact grid just above downtown.
About the Avenues
The Avenues climbs the foothills directly north and east of downtown Salt Lake City. Its tight grid uses numbered avenues running east to west and lettered streets (A Street, B Street and so on) running north to south, which makes it easy to navigate. Streets get steeper and views get wider the higher you go.
- Outdoors: City Creek Canyon, Memory Grove and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail are right at the neighborhood’s edge, and Ensign Peak is a short hike.
- Nearby: downtown, the State Capitol, the University of Utah and neighborhood cafes tucked into the grid.
- Commute: minutes to downtown offices, TRAX and I-15.
Homes in the Avenues
The Avenues has one of the city’s largest collections of Victorian-era homes, along with early 1900s bungalows, foursquares, mid-century infill, small apartment buildings and condos. Lots are generally small and street parking is common, while homes higher up the hill often trade on views.
What buyers and sellers should know
Parts of the Avenues fall within a local historic district, so exterior changes can require city review. Older homes deserve careful inspections of the foundation, sewer line and electrical. Winter driving on the steepest upper streets is a real consideration, and off-street parking or a garage adds noticeable value here.
